St Mary's Catholic Primary School

Science

At St. Mary’s we ensure our curriculum planning has good coverage of the National Curriculum objectives. We have a two-year cycle which ensures that the children have coverage of all the scientific objectives for key stage one and key stage two.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biologychemistry and physics,
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them,
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Throughout the children's topics, the teachers will provide opportunities for the children to use the outdoor learning facilities and the world around them to deepen their learning.

Working Scientifically

Throughout science lessons the children are taught the skills of 'Working Scientifically'. Our class teachers promote enquiry and investigation as the children learn both conceptual understanding and science skills.
